HERTFORD- John Edward Piland, 83, native of Gates County, died Jan. 6, 2003 in 
his home.

Piland was the son of the late Ike and Sophie Lassiter Piland.

He worked with the former Towe Motor Company as an auto mechanic for 40 years 
and was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Myrtle Hill Piland, a son John E. Piland Jr. of 
Clayton, NC; a sister, Maxie Lassiter of Gatesville; two grandchildren and a 
great-grandchild.

Graveside services were held Jan. 9, 2003 in Cedar Wood Cemetery with the Rev. 
Kenneth MeNeill officiating.
