Obituary of James Rufus Stokely ~ 2007






James Rufus Stokely, 87, of 573 Woodville Road, Hertford, died Friday, March 
16, 2007, in his home. 

Born in Perquimans County he was predeceased by his wife and soulmate of 59 
years, Mattie Russell Stokely, and his parents, Murden and Celtic White Stokely.

He was a retired farmer and a lifelong member of Berea Church of Christ. He 
served in the Army during World War II in Europe with the 338th Field Artillery 
Battalion as a cannoneer. 

He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Kay S. Douglas and husband, David,
of Virginia Beach, Va., James R. Stokely Jr. and wife, Wendy, Ruth Ann S. Casey 
and husband, Doug, of Suffolk, Va., and Sandra S. Nixon and husband, Ernest, of 
Jacksonville, Fla.; four sisters, Louie S. Swineford and Annie S. Lewis, both 
of Raleigh, Inez S. Long and Peggy S. Tepper, both of Hertford; three brothers, 
Jerry Stokely of West Point, Va., Ike Stokely and Paul Stokely, both of 
Hertford; eight grandchildren, Davy Douglas, Sharon Douglas Lanning, Ken 
Douglas, Stacey Stokely, Travis Stokely, Troy Stokely, Jodie Casey Bass and 
Chris Nixon; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a great-grandchild, Tamra Kay Lanning; a sister, 
Elizabeth S. Heath and a brother, Oscar Stokely. 

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Swindell 
Funeral and Cremation Services. 

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Berea Church of Christ with 
I.K. "Sonny" Furrow officiating. 

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

1664 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC, 27944. Swindell Funeral and Cremation Services
is serving the Stokely family.
